What are the prerequisites for the MPH program?
1) Applicants should have an undergraduate quality or grade point average of at least 3.0.
2) Applicants must have completed and earned a C or better in a three-credit math or statistics class taken in a math or statistics department. They must also have completed six credits of social sciences (anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology, social psychology).
3) International applicants must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Duolingo English Test. Though the University of Pittsburgh requires a minimum TOEFL score of 80 on the Internet test, BCHS requires scores of 100 on the TOEFL, Band 7.0 on the IELTS, or 130 on Duolingo for consideration. Applicants with a score lower than these requirements are not eligible for admission. Tests must be taken within two years of application. See here for more details.
4) Applicants must describe in their statement of purpose their journey to public health, their understanding of how the program of study will benefit them in achieving their career goals in the field of public health and how pursuit of the MPH at the University of Pittsburgh is integral to their long-term plans.
What are the prerequisites for the PhD program?
1) A post-baccalaureate degree in a discipline relevant to public health, such as social work or anthropology, or an MD or JD. International post baccalaureate degrees must be equivalent to a US MPH, as determined by a WES ICAP evaluation. The Committee will review these cases individually.
2) A clear statement of what your research goals are and how the program of study will contribute to achieving your career goals. You may use this statement to tell us your professional story, who would you like to work with, and clarify your skills.
3) Three letters of recommendation from individuals in a position to judge your professional and/or academic abilities.
4) Graduate quality or grade point average of at least 3.3. You must submit transcripts of all college level study.
5) Completion of all courses listed on the Prerequisite Course Form for Pitt Public Health applicants.
