CAPH Epidemiology of Aging Workshop Series

Center for Aging and Population Health (CAPH) - Epidemiology of Aging Workshop Series

The Epidemiology of Aging Workshop Series is a hybrid of a journal club as well as a course within the Department of Epidemiology--(EPIDEM 2950). All interested in joining the discussions are welcome to attend. This workshop is offered every Friday from 12:30pm-1:30pm during the fall term and 1:00pm-2:00pm during the spring term. It takes place at 130 N. Bellefield Avenue, Room 324. If you would like to attend remotely, please contact Michelle Utz-Kiley (kileym@edc.pitt.edu) to obtain the Zoom meeting information.

The workshop schedule will consist of a seminar and article review/professional skills sessions that alternate on a biweekly basis. Although this is a course within the Department of Epidemiology in which students can enroll, those interested in joining the discussions are welcome to attend. This is a brown bag workshop—bring your lunch and please join us.

The workshops are designed as practical professional skill development to supplement to the additional coursework for the Epidemiology of Aging trainees and students. The workshop will include sessions on: presentations by the students from their research, journal article reviews, and professional skills sessions. The presentation sessions provide an opportunity for students to present and refine their interim research and data analyses by obtaining feedback from peers, faculty and mentors on their work in progress.

Journal article review sessions will provide an opportunity for students to identify and share current articles relevant to the epidemiology of aging and develop proficiency in the critical review of scientific literature. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the methods used in the literature, and a mock manuscript review session may be included. A faculty member will help student leaders select one article (distributed before the meeting) and will work with students to encourage questions and discussion among the group.

Professional skill sessions will vary by semester and cover topics such as post-doctoral career development, grant and professional medical writing, and longitudinal data analysis.

Epidemiology of Aging trainees are expected to enroll for the course (EPIDEM 2950) for a minimum of two (2) terms and attend for the duration of their training. The workshops are designed as practical professional skill development to supplement the additional coursework for Epidemiology of Aging trainees and students.

Teaching/Learning Objectives

  • Goal 1: To gain practical experience in presenting results and in peer review of presentations.
The presentation sessions provide an opportunity for students to present and refine their interim research and data analyses by obtaining feedback from peers, faculty and mentors on their work in progress.
  • Goal 2: To develop skills in performing a critical review of literature in the epidemiology of aging.
Through the Journal Article Reviews and Workshops, the students will have the opportunity to identify and share current articles relevant to the epidemiology of aging. Emphasis will be placed on understanding emerging and novel methods, particularly longitudinal statistical analyses techniques (e.g., handling missing data longitudinally; interpreting changes in slopes over time; and joint modeling. A faculty member will help student leaders select one article to be distributed before the meeting and will work with students to encourage questions and discussion among the group.
  • Goal 3: To develop skills, tools, and resources for writing, editing, and submitting a manuscript
Professional skill sessions will vary by semester and cover topics such as post-doctoral career development, grant and professional medical writing, and longitudinal data analysis.
