Six students from the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health participated in the Pitt Public Health 2024 Graduation Ceremony on April 26. Altogether, over 250 people celebrated their graduation at the ceremony, including the first nine graduates from Pitt Public Health’s new bachelor of science in public health program.
“Graduation is such an exciting event. We’re proud of our graduates and look forward to seeing what they bring to public health throughout their careers,” said EOH Department Chair Sally Wenzel.
This year’s speaker, Admiral Rachel L. Levine, assistant secretary for health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services spoke of the people she meets in her role and the issues that influence their well-being and pursuit of health and happiness, asking the “nation’s newest public health leaders” how to ensure that pursuit. “Communities need humane housing. They need reliable transportation. They need economic justice and economic opportunities,” she explained. “They need environmental justice, and now, climate justice. Improving our nation’s health and wellbeing requires addressing all of these basic needs.”
Congratulations to this year’s graduates!
Congratulations also to Firoz Abdoel Wahid, assistant professor in EOH, the 2024 winner of the Bernard D. Goldstein Undergraduate Public Health Teaching Award.
