Faculty and Staff Development Program

A University HR-level program offering a variety of workshops to enhance the professional and personal development of Pitt faculty and staff. Workshops are offered in the fall and spring terms and all faculty and staff are invited to participate. Opportunities exist in various categories and this is where the DEI certificate is housed.

Center for Teaching and Learning Mentoring Academy

A series of three sessions devoted to developing your skills in eight mentoring competency areas. These two- to three-hour sessions, offered in the fall and spring terms, are interactive and use case studies and small group activities.

A program from the Institute for Clinical Research Education providing fellows, postdocs, and junior faculty from underrepresented minority backgrounds with rigorous career development in a supportive, collegial environment.

Office of Academic Career Development, Health Sciences (OACD)

Dedicated to providing professionals in the schools of the health sciences with the tools, resources and support they need to achieve their full potential as leaders in biomedical research, education and clinical practice. The OACD supports graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, residents, clinical fellows and faculty, potentiating career excellence at all levels.

Pitt Membership in National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD)

Pitt is an institutional member of the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD), a nationally recognized, independent organization that provides online career development and mentoring resources for faculty, post-docs, and graduate students.

It provides a variety of virtual programs and resources including multi-week courses; core curriculum webinars; guest expert webinars; private discussion forums for peer-mentoring, problem solving, and moderated writing challenges; and access to NCFDD's extensive member library.

Practicum in University Teaching (3 credit course)

FACDEV 2200 Practicum in University Teaching is a three-credit course offered in the fall, spring, and summer semesters in two formats (traditional and hybrid).

There are four major areas covered in this certification listed below, as well as student exercises and a teaching practicum.

Achievement in Pedagogy Badge

For those looking to demonstrate teaching ability and a dedication to pedagogy, the University Center for Teaching and Learning invites you to earn the Achievement in Pedagogy Badge. This "evidence of teaching excellence" also can be listed on a CV, and, as it a digital badge, the work that was completed to satisfy requirements can be digitally shared with potential employers or other third party entities.

Requirements

Participants are required to attend two workshops in three-of-five possible focus areas (6 total) and compose a final 2–3 page reflective essay stating how the process of completing the badge has made an impact on their teaching. The five focus areas include:

  • educational technology
  • professional development
  • online teaching
  • diversity
