Walid Gellad

Walid Gellad, MD, MPH, is a professor of medicine and health policy at the University of Pittsburgh, where he leads the Center for Pharmaceutical Policy and Prescribing.

Gellad’s research focuses on optimizing the quality, safety, and value of prescribing and prescription drug use. His work spans clinical areas, from diabetes, to hepatitis c, to prescription drug and substance abuse. He is also a nationally recognized authority on improving the measurement of medication adherence as well as on prescription drug pricing policy and spending. His research is funded by grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs, NIH, AHRQ, and the State of Pennsylvania. He has authored close to 100 articles in the leading medical and policy journals, and he is a regular commentator on pharmaceutical policy issues in major news outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, and Wall Street Journal.

Gellad is board certified in internal medicine and completed a residency and chief residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He sees primary care patients in the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and attends on the inpatient general medical service.
