Dr. Trevor Orchard, a physician epidemiologist, has served over 30 years as Principal Investigator (PI) of the Pittsburgh Epidemiology of Diabetes Complications Study (EDC), which has been awarded MERIT status. The EDC has published over 200 papers on type 1 diabetes complications. Dr. Orchard is an experienced clinical trialist and has received continual NIH research funding as a PI since 1980. In addition to EDC Dr. Orchard has served as PI for the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications Study (a follow up of the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial for which he served on the Mortality and Morbidity Classification Committee) for the last 25 years, and also served as co-investigator for the Diabetes Prevention Program and as PI for the DPP Outcomes Study. In these studies he contributed mainly to the cardiovascular analyses, which is a major focus of his 400 publications. His international work has included collaboration in terms of diabetes complications and mortality for the Diabetes Epidemiology Research International and WHO DIAMOND Studies. Dr. Orchard directed the Nutrition Lipid Program at the University of Pittsburgh/UPMC which provided outpatient care for those with lipid disorders, for 35 years. This clinic also served as a training facility for Endocrine and Cardiovascular Fellows. Dr. Orchard has trained 26 doctoral students, 34 master’s students and 9 post-doctoral fellows while also teaching the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Course for 20 years. He is a past PI of the T32 Cardiovascular Epidemiology Training grant. For the last 10 years, Dr. Orchard has been assisting with the development of diabetes care in Rwanda through the Life for a Child programme, which has also provided 13 MPH students with the opportunity to conduct their practicum in Rwanda. Dr. Orchard was recently appointed as a Commissioner/Team Leader for the Lancet Diabetes Commission and has served extensively as a reviewer for journals, NIH and professional organizations. His numerous awards include the ADA Kelly West award and the IDEG Peter Bennett award.
