I am an infectious disease epidemiologist with special interest in the natural history of HIV and the metabolic and cardiovascular complications unique to HIV infection and antiretroviral therapies. For the past 30 years, I have served as the Co-Principal Investigator of the Pittsburgh Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) and initiated and participated in dozens of internal and external MACS collaborations on a broad array of topics. Early major contributions were the reporting of risk factors for the sexual transmission of HIV (Kingsley, et al. The Lancet 1987), the sexual transmission efficiency of HBV and HIV (Kingsley, et al. JAMA 1990) and the prognostic value of HIV viral load for progression to AIDS and death (Mellors…and Kingsley, Science 1996). In 1999, I initiated the MACS studies in HIV-associated lipodystrophy and in 2004, I led the first MACS CVD study utilizing cardiac CT for the quantitation of coronary artery calcium, a marker for coronary atherosclerosis.
For over 10 years, I served as Chairman for the MACS Metabolic Working group and have led and participated in several collaborations on investigations of diabetes, insulin resistance, body habitus changes, physical activity and lipid alterations among HIV-infected and uninfected men. Many of these collaborations have produced important contributions to the literature.
