Contributions to Public Health

Broadly, the goal of my work is to end health inequities experienced among individuals surveilled or impacted by the criminal legal system (e.g., the system of policing, prosecution, courts, detention, and community supervision [probation or parole]). I direct the Just Health Collaborative which supports the achievement of this goal through our portfolio of federally funded research. At the Just Health Collaborative we use multiple research methods and community-engaged strategies to:

  • Explore the social and structural drivers of inequities in substance use, sexual and reproductive health, and violence victimization experienced by individuals impacted by the criminal legal system;
  • Examine the pathways through which contact with the criminal legal system exacerbates existing health inequities;
  • Design, implement, and evaluate programs addressing health inequities experienced among individuals impacted by the criminal legal system;
  • Improve representation of individuals with lived experience in the criminal legal system in health services research.
