Undergraduate Scholars Program: How to Apply

Applications opened on November 1, 2024 and close at 11:59 PM ET on January 31, 2025. Applicants will be notified in late March 2025.

Eligibility Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)
  • Minimum 2.7 GPA
  • Enrolled in a four-year college or university and have completed at least two years of undergraduate study or
  • Recent graduate of a four-year college or university (Summer 2024, Fall/Winter 2024 and Spring 2025) or
  • Recent graduate of a two-year community college (Summer 2024, Fall/Winter 2024, and Spring 2025)
  • Interest in advancing health equity or reducing health disparities
  • Expressed interest in a career in public health

Application Materials

The following application materials are required:

  1. Online application form 
  2. Unofficial academic transcript(s) as PDF
  3. Two letters of recommendation – from individuals who know you from academic (professor or teacher) or professional/work (supervisor) settings. At least one letter should be from an academic setting.
  4. Resumé (1-2 pages maximum)
  5. Three essays (200 words maximum for each essay)

Letters of recommendation must be submitted by the recommender via email to phusp@pitt.edu by the application deadline.

Application Deadline

All application materials are due by 11:59 p.m. on January 31, 2025.

Admission Notification

Applicants will be notified in mid March 2025. 

Tips for Preparing Your Application

Before starting your application, review the frequently asked questions (FAQs) and have all your documents and information readily available and saved in the correct format. You must complete and submit your application in one sitting. You will not be able to save your work and go back to it at another time. 

You will need the following materials to complete your application: 

  • Name and contact information for two recommenders
    • The application asks for the name, title, organization/university, email, and phone number of the two people writing your letters of recommendation.
  • Resumé (upload one file in PDF format)
    • 1-2 pages
    • File should not exceed 25MB
    • Save file as lastname_firstname_resume
  • Unofficial transcript(s) (upload one file in PDF, PNG, GIF or JPG format)
    • Combine all transcript pages into one file
    • File should not exceed 25MB
    • Save file as lastname_firstname_ugtranscript
  • 3 essays
    • You will enter your essays into text boxes. We strongly recommended that you write them before starting the online application form. You can cut and paste your essays into the text boxes.
