IDM's Kyle-Lion and McCreavy selected as Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows

Congratulations to Gabrielle Kyle-Lion (IDM '21) and Claire McCreavy (IDM '21), two MPH students in the infectious disease management, intervention, and community practice track who selected as 2020-21 Pittsburgh Schweitzer Fellows. Working with the Catholic Charities of Pittsburgh, their project will address the lack of preventative breast cancer screenings for immigrant women. Biostats student wins best presentation award

Masters student Eli Lovelace (BIOS '20) won the Best Presentation award in local Kaggle Competition using the web-based data repository. The Pittsburgh Data Science Meetup Group hosted a Kaggle Competition on February 18, awarding prizes in two categories: most accurate model and best presentation. Lovelace won first place in the best presentation category.  

2020 Best Poster Presentation - Jason Kennedy

Congratulations to master's candidate Jason Kennedy (BIOST MS '20) who was awarded Best Poster Presentation at the annual Biostatistics Research Day on February 27 for his work on “The association between clinical phenotype cohesiveness and sepsis transitions after presentation.”   

2020 Best Poster Honorable Mention - Qing Yin

Congratulations to doctoral candidate Qing Yin (BIOS '20) who received an honorable mention for his poster presentation at the annual Biostatistics Research Day on February 27 for his work on “Semi-parametric Shape Restricted Mixed Effect Regression Spline with Application on State-Wide Prenatal Screening Program Data.”  

2020 Best Oral Presentation Honorable Mention - Luna Wei

Congratulations to doctoral student Yue (Luna) Wei (BIOS '21) on winning Best Oral Presentation Honorable Mention at the annual Biostatistics Research Day on February 27 for her work on “A Simultaneous Inference Procedure to Identify Subgroups in Targeted Therapy Development with Time-to-event Outcomes.”   

BIOST students Jia and Liu win national ENAR distinguished paper award

Congratulations to Yichen Jia (BIOST ’22, front-left) and Peng Liu (BIOST '16 '21, front-right), winners of the national ENAR Distinguished Paper Award. The two doctoral students will present their award-winning work at one of the country's largest professional gatherings of biostatisticians, the ENAR Spring Meeting in Nashville, March 22–25. Pitt Biostatistics students are consistently recognized among these top student researchers.

Boyd wins Lingzi Lu Memorial Award

Kristina Boyd (BIOST '19) will receive the 2020 award, created in 2013 by the American Statistical Association in partnership with the International Chinese Statistical Association in rememberance of Lingzi Lu, the first-year student in the statistics master's program at Boston University who lost her life in the bombing at the Boston Marathon in April of that year. Kathyayini wins ICMI travel award from Society of Mucosal Immunology

Kathyayini Gopalakrishna (HUGEN '20) won a travel award from the Society of Mucosal Immunology to give an oral presentation at the 19th International Congress of Mucosal Immunology 2019, held at Brisbane, Australia. Gopalakrishna was first author on a stoudy that found that maternal IgA protects against the development of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants.   

Hoang awarded 59th Grand Council Deputy Outstanding Achievement Award

The Grand Council Deputy Outstanding Achievement Award was given to Karen Hoang (MMPH '21) at the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Inc. Grand Council Convention in Washington, D.C. in July 2019. This award is given to the #1 chapter advisor in the organization. Hoang was nominated by the Beta Kappa Chapter at Pitt.   

Zhang wins Arlene Caggiula Student Award in Nutrition

Xiao Zhang (EPI '23) won this award for outstanding epidemiology students conducting nutrient-related research. Zhang was honored for her contribution to exploring the effect of high-dose marine omega-3 fatty acids on atherosclerosis. This work was published in the journal Nutrients in November 2019 with Zhang as senior author.   

Ngo named Joseph F. Mulach Jr. and Louisa A. Mulach Scholar

"This award meant a lot to me in terms of having a bit more financial stability, which has allowed me to focus more n my studies and work," said Marilyn Ngo (HUGEN '20) of being named one of this year's scholars. "Research in this field can go towards helping so many people in new and innovative ways."   

Team BlueHack Geneticists wins social media award at IBM BlueHack Competition 2019

Justin A. Dutta (HUGEN '23), Ellyn Dunbar (HUGEN '23), Vibha Acharya (HUGEN '21), Muaaz Aslam, and Dongjing Liu (HUGEN '21) formed Team BlueHack Geneticists for the IBM BlueHack Competition the weekend of October 26-27 to work on their creative health care question and innovative solution, and they took home the social media award!   

Garrison, Abdi, Litam win first place nationally in Everett V. Fox Student Case Competition

IDM Research Day expanded with guest speakers and more than 70 student presenters

The Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology held their biggest-ever research day celebration, featuring three guest speakers: Jonathan Oliver spoke about the emerging tick-borne diseases of the northern United States, Daniel Voth talked about using human-derived systems to investigate bacterial pulmonary infection, and David Lampe lectured on inhibiting the spread of malaria by altering the mosquito microbiome.

"Being a Dawn Gideon Scholar helped me feel like HPM was a great fit for me.
