Meet our Graduates: Emmett Henderson

image

BCHS PhD student Emmett Henderson will complete his dissertation and defend in early August. His research explores the effect of psychosocial factors like stigma and social support on the cognitive function of older gay and bisexual men.

How do you amuse yourself outside of school?

I love to be outside, so I have been spending a lot of time hiking and biking this spring and summer. I studied German and Spanish throughout high school and college, and my quarantine activity has been picking those languages up again.

What is your favorite music genre?

I was a music major as an undergrad. I do not play much anymore but I still really enjoy classical music. My favorite piece is Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov

Highlight a collaboration with an amazing colleague:

I recently published a paper "Does Social Support Predict Depression Symptoms? A Longitudinal Study of Midlfe and Older Men Who Have Sex with Men" from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study along with BCHS' Robert Coulter and Jamie Egan, and IDM and BCHS' Mackey Friedman. This was an exciting paper for me because I got to use a new statistical technique, longitudinal latent class analysis, that I learned from Dr. Coulter.

My work reflects my passion for sexual and gender minority (SGM) health. My goal is to help create opportunities for SGM individuals to thrive, however people define that for themselves.
