Hard-won experience, changing demographics and reduced strain on hospitals are all possibilities — but no one knows how long the change will last.
NATURE — Many regions of the world have experienced the pandemic in punishing waves, but one shining light is the dwindling fatality rate in intensive-care units.
Critical-care physician Derek Angus (BCHS ’92) at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania says that his hospital’s statistics team also saw reductions over time. “Without question, we’ve noticed a drop in mortality,” says Angus. “All things being equal, patients have a better chance of getting out alive.”
