On November 6 from 11 am-12 pm (EST) join an informal zoom meeting with analysts from the Health Care team at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). You’ll learn about GAO’s mission, opportunities for internships and employment, and life as an analyst at one of the best places to work in the federal government (top 5 best mid-sized agencies in 2018 and 2019).

What is the GAO? GAO is a nonpartisan, independent agency that works for Congress. GAO examines how taxpayer dollars are spent and provides timely and fact-based information to Congress and the public, usually through reports and testimonies. Our reports provide recommendations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the federal government, and our work saves billions of dollars each year. Comprised of around 3,000 employees, our headquarters is located in Washington, DC, and we have offices in 11 other major cities across the United States.

What opportunities are available? GAO offers PAID student internships (yes, paid!) to work alongside analysts on our audit work. Most full-time analysts enter our workforce through the Professional Development Program (PDP), which is a two-year program where new analysts rotate through three mission teams and are eligible for a raise every six months.

What else should I know?

  • GAO is comprised of 15 mission-teams divided to cover every facet of federal function and spending – from defense to education, information technology to health care, GAO is there to audit it.
  • GAO’s Health Care team has an exciting portfolio of issues that range from the effectiveness of the country’s federal health care programs—like Medicare and Medicaid—to responses to public health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. These programs and issues touch the daily lives of all Americans; drive the fiscal condition of the federal budget; and affect about 1/5 of the nation’s economy.
  • GAO prides itself on a culture of diversity and inclusion and has adopted core values of valuing, respecting, and treating all people fairly. GAO’s support of diversity has been top-ranked among mid-sized federal agencies since 2011.
  • GAO’s independence allows us to produce fact-based, information-driven products to our clients, and our work is highly respected by both parties in Congress.
  • As an analyst, you will have the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world where the U.S. government is spending taxpayer dollars to audit how programs are implemented on the ground. Our teams travel around the world to support our mission.

Please check out our website at www.GAO.gov to explore recent reports and to learn more about what GAO does for Congress and the American people.  We hope you can join us on November 6th to hear more and to ask any questions!
