Alumni initiate Jason Flatt (BCHS ’13) is an assistant professor in residence in social and behavioral sciences at the Institute for Health & Aging at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) School of Nursing, where he leads studies exploring behavioral and social factors that increase risk for Alzheimer's disease and associated dementias (ADRD). He also is a faculty member with the UCSF Healthforce and affiliate faculty with the UCSF Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies.

In 2017–18, Flatt conducted a study on risk and protective factors for cognitive function and ADRD in sexual and gender minority (SGM) older adults. He has collaborated on studies examining correlates of subjective cognitive decline in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults—his work in this area was published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease—and he has coauthored papers on LGBT caregivers and on midlife pulmonary function. Recently, he was accepted into the National Institute of Health Regional Research Workshop on Sexual & Gender Minority Health Research. He has received numerous grants and awards, including a three-year KL2 career development award from the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute Career Development Program, and he subsequently resubmitted his K01 career development award to the National Institute on Aging and received a perfect score. For the past 10 years, Flatt has used his platform as a public health researcher to work as an advocate for the LGBTQI community. He has partnered with interACT Advocates for Intersex Youth and Openhouse, and has served on the San Francisco Long Term Care Coordinating Council Dementia Care Excellence Workgroup.
