The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health invites the public health community to attend a memorial symposium on Friday May 31, in honor of Dr. Kim Sutton Tyrrell who passed away late last year.
Dr. Tyrrell spent a quarter century at the School of Public Health as a dedicated, creative, and highly successful investigator and mentor. She rose to professor of epidemiology and vice-chair for academics. Devoting much of her academic career to cardiovascular and women’s health, Dr. Tyrrell pioneered the use of non-invasive technology, such as carotid ultrasound and arterial pulse wave velocity, in large populations to determine the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Several of Dr. Tyrrell’s friends and colleagues will speak at the symposium, including Dr. Anne Newman, epidemiology chair; Dr. Michiel L. Bots, epidemiologist at the University Medical Center Utrecht; and Dean Roberta B. Ness of the University of Texas School of Public Health.
The Kim Sutton-Tyrrell Memorial Symposium will be held at 1 p.m. May 31 in the University of Pittsburgh’s University Club Ballroom B, 123 University Place, Pittsburgh, 15261.
The Kim Sutton-Tyrrell Endowed Fund was established at the end of 2012 to honor her memory and commitment to the advancement of the public’s health. Thanks to the generosity of the Sutton-Tyrrell family, friends and colleagues, $10,000 has already been donated. The ultimate goal is to raise an additional $40,000 to establish the Kim Sutton-Tyrrell Endowed Scholarship Fund that would provide partial tuition support on an annual basis to a promising student who exemplifies her commitment to public health.
