Blackwood Receives the Margaret F. Gloninger Service Award

Michael Blackwood (HPM '80) was recognized on May 20, 2016, with the Margaret F. Gloninger Service Award at the annual Alumni Awards dinner.

The Margaret F. Gloninger Service Award is presented annually since 1993 to to an alumnus/na who has made a significant contribution to the school or to the greater community through volunteer service. This award was established in honor of the late Margaret Fitzgerald Gloninger (MSHyg ’66), Pitt Public Health graduate and former faculty member in maternal and child health.

Blackwood served as president and CEO of Gateway Health Plan in Pittsburgh for nearly 14 years. He retired from Gateway in 2013 and immediately created Blackwood Healthcare Consulting, LLC, a firm primarily focused on accountable care organization formations, health insurance risk assumption, leadership development, negotiation strategies, and uses of medical/social models of care to reduce costs and increase quality. Blackwood has assisted local foundations, hospitals, and social service agencies to succeed under the Affordable Care Act and unfolding Pennsylvania government health care initiatives.

He previously served as president and CEO of HealthAmerica PA, Inc. and as an assistant administrator of Montefiore Hospital. Blackwood also served as a officer in the Medical Service Corps of the U.S. Army for more than five years, both stateside and in Europe. His other professional affiliations have included: board of directors, Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative; president, board of directors, Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center; chair, audit committee, board of directors, Highmark Foundation; and policy board member, Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Blackwood has served Pitt Public Health as executive-in-residence for the Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM), as president of the HPM alumni association, and in numerous advisory and teaching roles over many years.

He is a member of Delta Omega, was recognized in 1992 with a Pitt Public Health Distinguished Alumni Award, and was selected in 1999 as one of 50 "significant contributors" to the field of public health since the school’s inception. Blackwood has received numerous awards including: an Health, Education and Welfare full grant traineeship; the Joseph F. Mulach Jr. Award from Life’s Work for assistance to people with disabilities and to the uninsured; Pennsylvania Rural Health Care Leader of the Year (1994); Meritorious Service Medal, Medical Service Corps, U.S. Army and Distinguished Military Graduate, Louisiana State University.

Blackwood earned his MPH degree in health administration in 1980 from Pitt Public Health.
