BCHS Faculty have partnered with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center health system to conduct community health needs assessments for their 13 hospitals in the region.

The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health (GSPH) has partnered with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center health system (UPMC) to assist UPMC in conducting a community health needs assessment(CHNA) for each of the 13 licensed hospitals by June 2013. Recent changes to the IRS requirements of not-for-profit hospitals to maintain their tax exempt status include assessing and prioritizing community health needs, engaging the community, and implementing and evaluating each of the hospitals' community benefit programs. This new requirement provides a unique opportunity for schools of public health and non-profit hospitals to collaborate. Leading GSPH efforts are BCHS department faculty members, Steven Albert, Jessica Burke, and Donna Almario Doebler. The ongoing collaboration between GSPH and UPMC highlights opportunities to improve population health for Western Pennsylvania.
