In this study, Dr. Zhang and coauthors examine geographic variation in medication adherence among patients with heart failure. They found that on average 52% of patients with heart failure were adherent (defined as a medication possession ratio≥0.8) for heart failure medications, and the proportion of adherent patients varied substantially by hospital-referral region, ranging from 36% to 71%. There was little correlation between drug spending and adherence, suggesting that areas with higher drug spending did not have systematically better adherence.
