Congratulations to alumnus CHARLES JOHN SCHLEUPNER (IDM ’68), who has been appointed to the Dean’s Council on Advancement for the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The council is a committee of volunteers created to advance the stature of the medical school by providing guidance, assistance, advocacy, and philanthropic investment in support of the school’s strategic objectives.
The Telehealth Appalachian AIDS Education and Training Center Project, led by IDM's LINDA FRANK, provides web-based HIV education, training, clinical guidelines, and resources to Appalachian community health centers. Frank has worked to increase knowledge and awareness about HIV disease in underserved communities in the hope of preventing discrimination and delivering more care to those who need it.
Byron Chuan (IDM '19) was awarded a 2017 Bob Yee Public Health Scholarship in recognition of academic excellence. A native of Atherton, CA, Chuan is pursuing an MS in infectious diseases and microbiology. He holds an undergraduate biology degree from the University of Pittsburgh (2012).
Saniya Sabnis (IDM '19) was awarded a 2017 Bob Yee Public Health Scholarship. A native of Monroeville, PA, Sabnis is pursuing an MPH with a concentration in infectious disease pathogenesis, eradication, and laboratory practice (MPH-PEL). She holds an undergraduate chemistry/bioscience degree from the University of Pittsburgh (2015).

A native of Pittsburgh, Salerno is pursuing an MPH with a concentration in infectious disease management, intervention, and community practice (MPH-MIC). THE LANCET - As the demographics of the HIV epidemic in the U.S. shift toward older age, IDM’s Pitt Men’s Study contributed to an article in Lancet on neurocognition in older HIV patients. The longitudinal study, which included more than 5,000 participants enrolled in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study, found a greater-than-expected effect of aging on episodic memory and motor function with advanced stages of HIV infection.
