Dr. Miljkovic's research focuses on the epidemiology of obesity and ectopic fat deposition, in particular, skeletal muscle fat infiltration (i.e. myosteatosis), and associated cardiometabolic disorders. Work is ongoing to better understand: 1) the patterns and correlates of change in body fat distribution and ectopic fat compartments with aging; 2) the relationship between these fat depots, cardiometabolic risk factors, and the development of diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases; 3) the race/ethnic differences in body fat distribution and ectopic fat depots, and their importance for observed race/ethnic differences in rates of diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases; and 4) identify novel risk factors for diabetes and other cardiometabolic diseases.
