Personal Statement

As a social and behavioral health scientist, the focus of my research is social justice, health equity, and disease prevention among sexual and gender minorities, particularly in communities of color. I have a special interest in community-engaged research and biobehavioral HIV prevention. In support of these interests, I have collaborated in HIV seroprevalence data collection and analysis for Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women in a community-engaged project, studying the impact of syndemics on HIV prevention outcomes.  I was a research coordinator in the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV Interventions (ATN) managing structural change development and community mobilization through the Connect to Protect® coalitions. Working as a liaison between the community and clinical services for HIV/STI prevention and treatment, I was Co-PI of a grant to encourage family planning engagement in youth of color. Currently, I am the primary investigator of a pilot study focused on understanding the preference for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) modality among Black MSM in the southeastern United States. I have had the opportunity to be an invited speaker at several universities, publish several peer-reviewed articles, and present research at professional conferences.
