2022 Program: June 27-July 22

The intensive four-week program will engage students to:
- learn core concepts relevant to today's most pressing public health issues
- apply public health knowledge through hands-on research projects and group work
- experience public health in the real-world through practice and field trips
Who Should Apply
The Academy will accept applications from current 10th and 11th grade students enrolled at the following Pittsburgh public high schools:
- Taylor Allderdice High School
- CAPA 6-12
- Barack Obama Academy of International Studies (Pittsburgh Obama 6-12)
- Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy (SciTech)
Eligible students must be academically motivated and have a strong interest in learning about public health science. Find additional eligibility information with the application. The application deadline is April 22, 2022 at 5 p.m. ET.
Students who successfully complete the Academy will receive a $1,000 award at the end of the program. Students will also receive support for public transportation to and from the Pitt campus to attend the Academy.
Interested applicants without access to a computer/tablet and/or without reliable access to the internet can and should apply. The program will provide necessary technical support for participants.
Academy Specifics
This engaging and interactive experience will include field trips for students to witness public health in action, a journal club to stimulate science reading and communication skills, and a mentorship program for each Academy student that includes a Pitt Public Health faculty member. Transportation will be provided for all field trips.
Weeks 1 & 2
Learn core public health concepts and career opportunities through case-based interactive lectures and exercises.
Week 3
Work on case studies and inquiry-based research projects, with emphasis on public health skill-building such as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership.
Week 4
The academy concludes with an individual student capstone project and final presentation.
Covid-19 Vaccine Requirement
The PHS Academy will follow the University of Pittsburgh’s Covid-19 vaccine requirement. Academy participants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 or have an approved exemption. To be fully vaccinated, an individual must have completed a primary Covid-19 series of vaccine doses.
