About

Teaching and Prevention through Quality Research

How can we keep pace with new health threats? It’s an exciting time to be an epidemiologist. Our research, training, and prevention programs are always changing in response to new outbreaks and health threats.

If we were to adopt a slogan for the Department of Epidemiology, it would be “Teaching and Prevention through Quality Research.” All three come into play when responding to disease outbreaks, bioterrorism threats, and natural disasters, as well as addressing healthy aging and chronic disease treatment, reproductive health, and demands for injury control and safer environments, among many other areas.

If your goal as a public health professional is to confront one or several of these complex health concerns through the study and control of factors leading to disease, we’ll equip you to do just that. Our graduates pursue careers as epidemiologists in three major areas: academia, public health practice, and health care and work for federal, state, and local government agencies; pharmaceutical companies; health departments; hospitals; and universities in offices, laboratories, classrooms, and in the field.
