Chang Recognized with Alumni Award for Teaching and Dissemination


Chung-Chou "Joyce" H. Chang (BIOST '98) was recognized on May 17 with the 2014 Award for Teaching and Dissemination at the annual Alumni Awards dinner.

The Alumni Award for Teaching and Dissemination is presented to an alumnus/na who has made significant contribution to education and dissemination, either in the classroom or in the field.

Chang is professor of medicine and core faculty of biostatistics and clinical and translational science, University of Pittsburgh. She received her PhD in biostatistics from Pitt Public Health. In the last 15 years, she developed and taught a number of biostatistics courses at the Department of Medicine and the Department of Biostatistics. She has consistently received outstanding evaluations from students and trainees and was the recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Teaching Award from the Institute for Clinical Research Education. Chang has served on master thesis committees and PhD dissertation committees for numerous students in various areas of health science, and she has served as a primary advisor for thirteen PhD students and seven master’s students. Several of her advisees have received awards for outstanding research from national conferences. Chang also collaborates with a large number of clinical researchers and has provided statistical support and consultations to colleagues in various departments and research centers at the University. She actively promotes the use of innovative, state-of-the-art statistical methods. She has applied these methods to a wide range of studies, including research on aging, HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, health services research, heart diseases, liver transplantation, and women’s health care. She has published more than one hundred peer-reviewed articles in scientific journals with her colleagues and students. Chang has served as a committee member for several national societies. She has been a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals in the fields of medicine, medical research methodology, and biostatistics, and has served on editorial boards for a number of these peer-reviewed journals.
