A study led by scientists in Pitt Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology was recently named one of the 10 most effective articles in geriatric medicine in 2016 at the American Geriatrics Society Annual Meeting. “Can a Healthy Lifestyle Compress the Disabled Period in Older Adults?” was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society last year and led by alumna MINI E. JACOB (EPI ’14), MD, PhD, who completed the research during her doctoral studies at Pitt Public Health and currently is of the Boston University School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School, and Veterans Affairs Boston Healthcare System. ANNE B. NEWMAN, MD, MPH, chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Pitt Public Health and the Katherine M. Detre Professor of Population Health Sciences, is senior author. Their study found that leading a healthy lifestyle not only extends one's lifespan, but it also shortens the time that is spent disabled—a finding that had previously eluded public health scientists and demonstrated the value of investing in healthy lifestyle promotion, even among the elderly.
