Pandav honored for work with the WHO in TImor-Leste

Alumnus RAJESH PANDAV (EPI ’01) has now completed two years as the World Health Organization Country Representative to the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste. We were delighted to receive updates on his accomplishments:

1. At the third National Health Conference on Universal Health Coverage, the Cuban Brigade in Timor-Leste and National University of Timor Leste recognized WHO support and gave me a special recognition award. In the group photo with students, the person on my left is Dr. Jose Ramos Horta, Nobel Laurete and former president of Timor-Leste.

2. Speeches of His Excellency Prime Minister of Timor-Leste appreciating WHO support: “The WHO Country Office and WHO Representative to Timor-Leste, Dr Rajesh Pandav, has always supported us unwaveringly in every area of health. His efforts in the area of tobacco control are particularly commendable. Whether it was technical guidance and consultation in drafting the tobacco legislation, or capacity building of our health system’s staff; creating awareness in the community on tobacco control or partnering with the civil society and NGOs; WHO’s support has always been valuable. We hope to continue to have this fruitful collaboration in to the future.”

3. WHO Rewards for Excellence from Director General Margaret Chan: “Dr Rajesh Pandav, WR Timor-Leste, for his excellent leadership and interpersonal relations, leading to several collaborative health programmes, and his holistic approach towards implementing plans and achieving goals.”

“All this has been possible because of the excellent education I received when I was at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health." Reported Pandav, "I would like to specially thank Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, MARY DERKACH and my mentor MARY GANGULI for guidance and support throughout my career in public health.”
