University of Pittsburgh Health Policy Institute (HPI) Director A. Everette James, J.D., M.B.A., has been named the M. Allen Pond Chair in Health Policy and Management at the Pitt Graduate School of Public Health.

Everette James, J.D., M.B.A, (above) has been named the M. Allen Pond Chair in Health Policy and Management at Pitt's Graduate School of Public Health.

The Pond Chair, which was made possible through gifts from an anonymous donor and UPMC in memory of Mr. Pond, P.E., a former dean and longtime faculty member of Pitt Public Health, recognizes significant contributions to the advancement of public health policy.

“This appointment recognizes the quality and impact of Professor James’s work to date, which has earned deep and widespread respect in both the academic and policymaking communities,” said Patrick Gallagher, Ph.D., Pitt chancellor. “It also is an expression of our confidence that in the years ahead, under Everette’s leadership, our Health Policy Institute will continue to be a positive force in the improvement of human health through evidence-based public policy.”

As director of Pitt’s Health Policy Institute, Mr. James oversees a far-reaching program that produces high-quality health services and policy research and educational programs for government, business and the foundation community. HPI is the only academic health policy institute in the U.S. that combines expertise across all of the health sciences – medicine, public health, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry and the rehabilitation sciences - to answer the key questions facing the U.S. health system. Mr. James, who also is associate vice chancellor for health policy and planning in the Pitt Schools of the Health Sciences, served as the 25th Pennsylvania secretary of health before joining the university.

“Professor James has been instrumental in building our successful health services and patient-centered outcomes research capabilities, and we are pleased to honor these achievements by awarding him the Pond Chair,” said Donald S. Burke, M.D., Pitt Public Health dean and UPMC-Jonas Salk Chair of Global Health.

HPI supports research in comparative effectiveness; pharmaceutical policy; media and technology; new models of interprofessional healthcare delivery; Medicaid and emerging health policy issues, such as prescription drug abuse; and the public health impacts of natural gas drilling.

“I am honored to receive the Pond Chair, especially given Mr. Pond’s remarkable record of service to the public health profession,” said Mr. James. “I look forward to building on the Pitt Health Policy Institute’s distinguished history to ensure that future health policymaking in Pennsylvania and the U.S. reflects the best scientific research.”

Mr. Pond served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service from 1948 to 1968, achieving the rank of rear admiral. As assistant surgeon general of the U.S. from 1963 to 1968, he was responsible for all major policy planning and legislative activities of the Public Health Service, and he developed the basic plan and legislation for the Partnership for Health Act of 1966.
