IDM Professor Receives Gates Foundation Grant


Yue Chen, MD, PhD, assistant professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, received a Grand Challenge Exploration grant of $100,000 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop an oral vaccine against HIV using Clostridia perfringen bacteria as a delivery vehicle. The proposed vaccine strategy holds great promise to develop a practical vaccine against HIV due to safety, low production cost, and easy administration. Chen is a 1998 graduate of GSPH. She completed her PhD in under the direction of her advisor Phalguni Gupta, PhD, professor and assistant chair of IDM.
